There are so many reasons to not take time out for ourselves (and no, spending time on Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat etc. etc. is not what I mean by taking time out of your busy day for some ‘me’ time!) that we risk not looking after the one person we rely on every day of our lives: us.
Am I sounding selfish?
No. (Well maybe yes) but let me explain further…….
In fact with the 24 hour news & social media channels surrounding us 24/7, there is all the more reason to switch off the screens & focus on our well being. (Before my family all pile in here saying “Pot/Kettle: she is addicted to her phone!” I will acknowledge here that they do have a valid point).
And that is before we take into consideration the more important pressures on our lives, such as
Family – from young children to aging parents, close friends to neighborly obligations; we all have commitments.
Work – commuting stress, new job, long hours & the tiredness that goes with it.
Projects – Moving home, getting married, school activity all take an enormous effort to see through.
Money – There is always a bill that needs paying. Who has spare money at the end of the month, earmarked for themselves? (♥)
OK. I can hear you thinking that I may need to change the title of this blog with all those responsibilities outlined above, but hear me out.

1. WHEN THINGS DON’T GO TO PLAN:
Very near the top of every parent’s nightmare list is to not be there for their children when they need them.
The reverse is equally true for children as their parents get older. ⇔
How many times have you taken on extra things to ‘help out‘ family, friends or colleagues who are overwhelmed or under the weather?
I’m guessing you wouldn’t think twice to help out, even as it adds to your workload.
But even so, I’m sure you would appreciate a heads-up so you can better adapt your day if at all possible, right?
If you thought your parent/friend/colleague would benefit from a treat, such as a spa day after a busy time or bout of illness, would you hesitate to organize it for them?
I expect you would happily encourage them to take some ‘me time’.
In fact, wouldn’t you be quite insistant that it would “Do them good?”
SO WHY WOULD YOU NOT DO THE SAME FOR YOURSELF?
WHY WAIT FOR WHEN YOU (OR THEM)ARE ON YOUR KNEES?
Give them the chance to do the same for you, but without it being in a time of crisis.
Clear your diary.
Get your bases covered.
Call in some favours.
Think of it as preventative medicine if you like.
After all, if you are in good health, both physically & mentally, you are much less likely to:
Feel stressed to the point of crisis
And way more likely to:
Keep on top of things
Be in a much better position to help others
Be more efficient & happy in all aspects of your world.

2. HOW TO RELAX
EASY! …..RIGHT? NOT ALWAYS.
If you are as addicted to your phone as I am, you may not realise that being in front of a bright screen for long periods of time makes it harder for you to switch off.
Screens are like caffeine for your eyes & the after effects linger long after you have (finally) turned them off.
Have you ever struggled getting to sleep straight after a ‘quick’ check up of other people’s lives on Social Media just before turning out your light?
I rest my case.
So, now you have booked in your spa appointment, take these actions to get the most out of your time away from normalcy:
First & foremost: PUT THE PHONE AWAY!
This is your time.
No one else’s.
We do not need to see an Insta. of your toes in spa slippers. I’m not kidding. I really don’t want to see that
Nor do we need to see you with a Snapchat filter to understand you are having a good time. We know you will be!
Leave it in the car/In your bag/Switched to silent in your locker. (You’ve got it covered. Your friends have got your back. You can dare to be out of contact for a while).
Deeply & repeatedly.
Over & over. Try to count (in your head😉 ) as you breathe in, hold it for a few seconds, then count as you slowly & fully exhale.
Repeat. Again. Again & again.
You will be surprised at just how much concentration it takes to do this.
So much so, that you will let all other thoughts fall away.
Go on: try it now.
See? (This is a useful tip to help you fall asleep or to de-stress anytime).
Enjoy whichever treatment you picked to the fullest.
Enjoy the scents & sounds around you.
Sleep if you want to (the therapists think it is a compliment & are used to snores, so don’t worry).
