I am at best an average golfer with a 24 handicap (on a good day), but am lucky enough to be living within 30 minutes of 9 golf courses on the French Riviera, each with their own unique character & corresponding challenges.
But which are the best?
And what makes them so?
From time to time, I have had the opportunity to play these nine and occasionally venture slightly further afield on the Côte d’Azur to Monaco or Terre Blanche in the Var.
The courses are varied. Some are tough & ideal for low handicap golfers, such as Royal Mougins. Others are more forgiving, like Cannes Mougins.
I am lucky to live between these two so can match my course choice to my confidence level that day!
One thing which is a key factor for golfers everywhere is the weather &, here on the Côte d’Azur we have an average of 300 days of sunshine a year! Let me assure you, for someone who grew up learning have to play golf in Yorkshire, often in horizontal rain, you soon realise that the combination of sunshine & golf is a wonderful thing!
Le Mas Candille offers green fee inclusive deals, as well as booking your tee time & buggy for you, and giving you some of our own golf balls, (which I find really helps to spread the word when I hook or slice them off the fairway into peoples’ gardens)!
So my personal top three courses ?
1/ Cannes Mougins Golf & Country Club: an English style course, forgiving but with some challenging holes.
2/ St. Donat Golf: this is a Pay & Play public course, but it looks like a private one. It is always in great condition with an easy first nine, followed by a tough second.
3/ Terre Blanche: about a 45 minutes drive away in the Var. American style with wide fairways, two 18 hole courses, the Chateau and the Riou. The Chateau is the easier of the two.
The reason Royal Mougins did not make my top three is that to fully enjoy it, you need a handicap of 15 or less; the first time I played Royal Mougins I lost 12 balls on the second hole! Clearly (I was having an off day &) this course will suit others perfectly.
The nine courses with 30 minutes of Le Mas Candille are :
Where to fly in to: Nice Côte d’Azur International Airport
Where to stay: Le Mas Candille, 5* Relais & Chateaux, Mougins of course!
They have a comprehensive, 2 night package which includes two green fees per guest, a Michelin* dinner, as well as breakfast buffet to give you the best start to your day of golf in the sun!
