A Top-Tier Team
Le Mas Candille’s biggest strength is our excellent team. Their professionalism, friendly dispositions and extensive knowledge are what makes a stay at Le Mas Candille stand out.
We think it’s important for our guests to know more about our team members, and we want to share more about their background and excellent credentials.
This month, we’ve tracked down the owner of Le Mas Candille, Mark Silver, to find out a bit more about him for you.
Hi Mark! How long have you been the owner of Le Mas Candille for?
Hello! I bought the hotel in February 2000 and it opened in October 2001.
What gave you the idea to start the hotel?
To be honest, it was a complete accident! During the 1990s, I owned an upscale health club and spa business and became a spa consultant for hotel groups by accident. One of these was trying to buy Le Mas Candille and over a period of time, I became friends with their management team. However, the deal fell through and one of them suggested that I’d be interested instead.
So I thought, why not? I then literally went straight to Paris and signed the papers (with no idea of how I would afford it!), and had bought the hotel.
What was your background before you were running the hotel?
I spent 14 years working in my family paint’s and chemical business, Kalon. I left the family business in 1990. In 1992, I started a property investment company, in 1993, a spa management and in the same year I opened the Academy Health Club & Spa.
What is your favourite thing about running Le Mas Candille?
One of the things I love about the hotel is, over the years, the amount of young staff who have come to work with us and later moved on to bigger and better things around the world. It gives me a sense of achievement that they’ve had the benefit of an apprenticeship at Le Mas Candille.
Another thing that gives me pleasure is to see a lot of guests coming to Le Mas Candille, having a great time and creating memories, and then years later coming back with their friends, relatives, children, etc.
In your opinion, what’s the best thing about Le Mas Candille?
Me? No, seriously – it’s a unique place where people can create amazing memories.
A bit about yourself… where are you from originally?
I’m from Leeds originally! I went to a boarding school in North Yorkshire called Giggleswick, and then worked for my dad when I was 16 (my first job was being lowered into vats of paint to clean the sides!). I stayed in North Yorkshire until I was 42, when I moved to Mougins to work on Le Mas Candille.
What do you love most about living in France?
I love the fact that the French take great pride in their country, their villages and towns. I also love the quality of life here and all the sunshine!
What do you like to do in your free time?
I’m a big fan of walking, especially long walks! In 2019 I did a 100km charity walk from London to Brighton, it was difficult but lots of fun!
