A Renowned Shopping Destination
Welcome to the French Riviera! Are you a resident of the region, or a lucky visitor? Either way, we at Le Mas Candille are thrilled to welcome you to our sunny spot! There is so much for you to do while you’re staying here, from sunbathing and adventure sports to incredible spas and shopping trips.
On that last note… let’s talk about shopping. Does the French Riviera have as much to offer on the shopping front as you may have heard? Why shop here, when you may be able to find the same brands back home? And what’s so special about fashion on the French Riviera anyway?
Let’s dive in!
The French Riviera has long been associated with fashion, clothing trends and near-ostentatious flashes of haute couture. Of course, a big part of this is the area’s long-held identity as a destination for the rich and famous. While the technical heyday of this time may have been in in the 20thCentury, with the likes of Grace Kelly and Marilyn Monroe visiting the Côteon a regular basis in the summer months, it isn’t any less true now.
For those who are yacht-owners, the French Riviera is blessed with several excellent large ports along the coast, allowing “yachties” lots of choice when it comes to docking their boats and coming ashore for an evening or two. This, as well as the private airports, gorgeous hotels and secluded restaurants not only shows off the region’s propensity to accommodate its famed clientele; it also allows this clientele a more private platform (but a platform nonetheless) to show off new designs.
So, if you know where to go, you’ll surely be running into these new designs and if you don’t know where to go, you’ll be reading about them in the papers the next day. This historical inclination towards fashion platforming is ever-present in the French Riviera to this day. The streets of Cannes, Saint-Tropez, Monte-Carlo, Nice and many more coastal towns are elegantly lined with the most in-demand brands of the haute couture world.
Cannes & Fashion Featured Events on the Côte d’Azur
Of course, in the world of fashion, events are paramount to a brand gaining a wider platform and what French event is more internationally profiled than the Cannes Film Festival? The Festival’s roots go back a long way: it was founded in 1946 and is one of the “Big Three” international film festivals.
While this is ostensibly a film and arts event, the big showstopper is the red carpet. The red carpet of the Cannes Film Festival is nearly as famous as the festival itself and is rolled out on the steps of the Palais des Festivals every year and immediately attracts a staggering number of tourists. Read more about the festival here!
The Cannes Film Festival is a huge moment for fashion on the Riviera. As one of the industry’s premier festivals, it cements Cannes’ relevance in the fashion world and keeps the A-list crowd coming back year after year. A stroll on the gorgeous Croisette will take you past many of the larger and better-known brands such as Dior, Gucci and Louis Vuitton. Given their prime spots, their window displays are usually extraordinary.
Conveniently, Cannes is only a short ten-minute drive from Le Mas Candille in Mougins and our helpful reception desk can arrange your trip to be amidst the action in May!
Where to Shop Other than Cannes on the French Riviera
Saint-Tropez and Monaco/Monte-Carlo are a bit further afield but both can be reached in less than an hour from Le Mas Candille. Their al fresco shopping experiences are world-famous and best paired with a meal at one of the excellent restaurants in the vicinity. Call our brilliant reception team for help in planning this part of your trip!
Côte d’Azur Fashion Trends
Now, if we’re discussing fashion on the French Riviera, something we absolutely can’t miss out is a bit about those styles that are frequently associated with the region. This has come about through all of the history and platforming mentioned above: when celebrities, royals, and others in the public view visit the south of France, they often adjust their outfits slightly.
This has led to the development of a fashion trend, the so-called “essential items to bring with you to the Côte d’Azur” fashion.
Let’s have a look at some of these essentials items below…
I mean, if you’re not getting your espadrilles out the second your plane touches down in Nice or Mandelieu, are you even doing it right?
But seriously, get some espadrilles if you’re visiting the south of France! They’re incredibly comfortable and versatile (wedges for an evening dinner, anyone? Flats for a nice walk along the Promenade des Anglais?).
Insider’s tip: do not buy them before you arrive! You are guaranteed to find better pairs here. Also, if you’re up for it, this will allow you to visit a local market to pick some up, which will be a fun experience (and we’ve got lots of tips for you when it comes to local markets).
Stripes, Stripes, and More Stripes
Another style strongly associated with the Côte d’Azur look is the so-called “Breton stripe”, the horizontal blue and white stripe which has become cognizant with the region.
A common (and gorgeous!) use of this style is on a loose shirt, paired with some denim shorts and, of course, a handy pair of espadrilles! This is a popular look with many models as it’s laid back, yet elegant and quintessentially French (although technically, it’s from the north of France).
And What About Your Hat?
And if you’ve got your espadrilles and Breton stripes on but you’re something is still missing? It’s the wide-brim straw boater!
Again, a very popular item with regular Riviera visitors and very necessary when having lunch on the beach. This hat will complete your Riviera look and forever remind you of the beautiful alleys and Mediterranean horizon once you’ve left.
Get to Shopping!
Once you’re settled in, time to hit the Croisette and pick up some espadrilles!
