READY TO KICK BACK IN THE EVENING & HAVE A DRINK WITH FRIENDS?
SOME SUGGESTIONS OF WHERE TO HANG OUT ON THE CÔTE D’AZUR FROM A LOCAL.
So, you’ve made it to the French Riviera! You’ve been to the galleries, the restaurants & beaches &, while you might never get tired of these, you’re thinking maybe it’s time to check out the nightlife.
Well, you’ve come to the right place.
The Côte d’Azur has countless pubs, bars & clubs of all shapes & sizes to entertain its visitors until the early hours, & not so early hours, of the morning.
If you’re looking for something a little lower key, a little more off the beaten path & a lot less touristy & expensive, check out these four special spots which are favourites with locals for good reason.
- The L’Abreuvoir Mougins
The l’Abreuvoir is a hidden gem of a bar. It is situated right in the old village of Mougins with possibly the friendliest bartenders I have ever met, spectacular views towards Grasse from the terrace & delicious, innovative cocktails & regular live music.
It’s quite small, but this only adds to its charm, (as do the delicious pizzas & other bar snacks). The atmosphere is welcoming & the music will definitely get your night off to the right start.
Don’t miss out on catching a stunning sunset from the terrace whilst enjoying one of their signature cocktails!
You can’t go wrong with the Abreuvoir! Be sure to say hello to Marco & Clement from me!
2. Charly’s Bar, Cannes
Charly’s is located right in the centre of Cannes on the well-known Rue de Suquet, a great spot for restaurants & bars. Another great choice when heading out with friends for a night of partying, it has something for everyone from renowned cocktails, a full list of wines and beers, to delicious tapas.
Charly’s is a lively spot for a drink, whether it’s after a long day exploring, rehydrating after the beach or simply your starting point for the night.
The location makes it easily accessible, being within walking distance of the train & bus stations, as well as Rue d’Antibes, the main shopping street in Cannes, & the beaches.
Head over to Charly’s Bar after a meal in the Suquet or before a night out & enjoy kicking off your evening in style!
3. The Hop Store Antibes
The Hop Store is a big Irish pub in Antibes located right next to the port & beach. They’ve a great selection of drinks & a somewhat ‘French-ified’ pub food menu for a decent price.
But the real attraction is the vibe of the place.
On weekend nights it’s almost impossible to get a seat on the big outside terrace, but if you do, it’s guaranteed that you’ll have a good time surrounded by an interesting mix of locals & yacht-workers.
The Hop Store is the kind of place where you make your own party, as the crowd gets louder as the night goes on. It’s in a great location, as the Boulevard d’Aguillon is full of pubs, bars & restaurants which are open late & all have a great array of food for your late-night needs.
Essentially, The Hop Store should be on your list of bars for a night out because its stellar location allows you to enjoy Antibes at night, with a great crowd, good drinks, & a good time overall.
4. Ma Nolan’s, Cannes
Ma Nolan’s is a great Irish pub you definitely don’t want to miss out on! It is another hub of friendliness in the great maze of Cannes, a place where there is always something going on.
It is literally steps away from the Palais des Festivals and the Rue d’Antibes so couldn’t be more central.
The owners are absolutely lovely & make you welcome whether for a quick drink, great meal or a long night full of live music: they have it all!
I’m personally a regular here when in the area, as its laid back attitude, high quality drinks & service, make it the perfect place to meet up with friends, or make new ones as the night goes on.
As someone who has grown up on the Riviera, these places all have a special place in my heart, where I’ve met some incredible people & had some epic nights out.
Of course, on the Côte d’Azur there are thousands of great spots for anything from a drink afterwork with collegues, to a night out dancing with your BFFs, but again, if you’re looking for something a bit different, with more of the spirit of French conviviality & appreciation for une bonne soirée, you can’t go wrong with these places.
Need somewhere to stay while you are in the French Riviera? Then it has to be Le Mas Candille, (which not only has the advantage of being in walking distance of L’Abrouvoir ;-p), but is a 45 bedroom, 5* boutique hotel with the most amazing pools, Spa & restaurants.
Cheers or, as the French say, tchin-tchin!
