It’s Christmas time!

This is it, we’ve made it: it’s nearly Christmas time!

Christmas is many people’s favourite holiday of the year and it is widely celebrated across France and much of the world.

Although Christmas is, of course, a religious holiday, it has also taken on a more cultural role for many families. Not to mention a commercial role! What’s great about this is that Christmas is a holiday open to everyone as new and old traditions merge.

Even better, “Christmas cheer” spreads the joy of the holiday across the whole month of December.  Traditions such as putting up and lighting the Christmas tree, Christmas market shopping, mulled wine drinking and much more keep everyone in good spirits as the nights get a bit colder.

Christmas in France

When we welcome guests to Le Mas Candille, we are first and foremost welcoming them to our home: the south of France. While many guests choose to visit Le Mas Candille in the summertime, the sunny Riviera winters are also a great time for a visit!

The temperate climate and sunny days aside, December is always an exciting time on the Côte d’Azur. Like everyone else, the French love Christmas and they make sure to show it! Every street, roundabout, and shop is adorned with festive decorations and the carolers are out in force on many nights.

If you’re still considering a French New Year’s Eve break, why not check out our excellent holiday offer?

France being a country of traditions, what are some popular French Christmas traditions?

Let’s have a look…

The Christmas Eve, or ‘Réveillon’, Meal

Many French families focus their festivities on Christmas Eve and this is highlighted by the familial Réveillon feast. Often the main moment when family and friends get together, the Réveillon is a long, happy meal, filled with seasonal delights.

Some common French delicacies to be had at this meal and this time of year include foie gras, oysters, chestnut-stuffed turkey, and much more!

And that’s not even getting into the desserts…

The Midnight Mass

The midnight mass held on Christmas Eve remains a significant tradition across France. For those guests interested in attending the midnight mass during their stay at Le Mas Candille, please contact our excellent reception team, who will provide all the necessary information!

Papillotes Sweets

These small sweets are iconic at this time of year in France. Papilottes are candied fruit or chocolate wrapped in colourful sparkling paper. Supposedly, their conception dates to 18thcentury Lyon! You’ll see these in most shops during the Christmas festivities.
